IFD STATION 26 TO CLOSE
Indianapolis Fire Department Station 26 will be closing
soon due to the plans for Hanna
Avenue to be widened. This station is located at Shelby Street and Hanna
Avenues has been handling approximately 2000 runs per year. While this news was
surprising to some area homeowners, discussions regarding this
closing have been underway between Perry Township and IFD for several months.
The fire and emergency runs which were dispatched to Station 26 will be divided
between Perry Township Station 61 and the IFD Garfield Station # 29.
"The Hanna Avenue Project will be widened and would eliminate 14 feet of the current stations frontage. For the safety of the firefighters, this would not allow enough room to maintain the fire apparatus," according to Mark Renner, Department of Public Safety. He added, "An additional squad will be added to the Garfield Station for medical emergencies and Beech Grove will continue to provide mutual aid to the area closest to them."
Station 26 is slated for closing March 1st.
